SEFAE | The online knowledge base and e-learning system that will support the acquisition of accident prevention and first aid literacy. Every single year, millions of people get injured in accidents and too many people die in accidents. There are many causes for accidents and most of us get injured several times during a lifetime. Even poor hygiene can cause health issues and diseases. There are a lot of situations where people can be affected all over the world. SEFAE, the smart electronic first aid education, was designed to tackle this far reaching problem. SEFAE is a subscription based online knowledge base (Health Literacy/First Aid Encyclopedia) and e-learning system that will support the acquisition of first aid literacy in a useful and meaningful way. Finally, this project is completely in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly with SDG 3 and SDG 4.

SEFAE will provide knowledge about the proper behaviour in an accident, as well as basic information about the prevention of accidents, the human anatomy everybody should know and hygiene, related to food, water and sanitation, which is very important for people in developing countries. In order to make sure that all the requirements – easy to use, to be useful, easy to understand, always up to date, supportive, secure and accessible from different devices - are met, SEFAE is developed and implemented by a highly committed team of experts.

SEFAE can be accessed from different devices, like mobile phones, tablets, laptops, computers and so on. SEFAE is easy to use and supports the learning process. SEFAE is reliable, scalable, available in different languages and culturally adapted. The health literacy content will be continuously extended and all different kind of media formats like audio, video and animation/simulation will be used. Life-saving content can be distributed via internet, mobile phones, libraries in schools, hospitals and training centres, as well as broadcasted via radio (Health Radio) or TV (Health TV) and so on.

Educational Technology is a very good opportunity to provide relevant content so that people get access to knowledge, even in poor countries. For that reason, educational technology can be used very well to develop and implement solutions in order to improve health literacy. Of course, SEFAE does not replace an on-site first aid course, but SEFAE supports the learning and refreshing of first aid skills.

Why is SEFAE a sustainable development project?

Most people learn best in their mother tongue. Particularly in developing countries, first aid education is rarely available in local languages. In the long run, we want to make first aid literacy available in the most spoken official languages.

Most people in developing countries have no access to good and free education. SEFAE is a social entrepreneurship and intended to tackle a global challenge. Company profits are primarily used to further develop technical infrastructure and content as well as to make health literacy available to poor people for free. That is why SEFAE is based on a responsible business model. A fair cross-financing approach supports the cost sharing between rich and poor countries. By doing so, each user in a wealthy country paying a fair price is getting access to first aid knowledge, but also enabling access to people in developing countries at the same time. By this cross-financing approach we can provide access to individual people and households in developing countries.
